Something I struggle with when decluttering is facing the environmental impact of what I’m getting rid of. We all read news about the Great Pacific Garbage Patch, forever plastics, and global warming, and it makes us feel horrible about putting things in the trash. This is a huge obstacle for so many of us when we need to get rid of stuff.

Today we’ll navigate paths through this eco-guilt, which I recently learned is an offshoot of climate grief—a newly emerging mode we’ve discovered to feel bad all the time. (As though you needed another reason to go news sober!)

To be clear, this is not a newsletter about the human impact on climate change. My goal is to help you create a functional home in the face of anxiety about the environment. The truth is hanging onto stuff you don’t need is not going to help with climate change, and might be making your life worse. You can actually have a net positive impact by letting go!
